Cookbooks for the Magical Kitchen

In Books, Practical Magick by Dodde1 Comment

With recommendations and quotes from Church of the Earth members (Thanks Everyone!)

Any cookbook can be a magical cookbook if you add your own intent and magic while you are cooking!

Laurel

After Imbolc, we were enjoying some social time on The Zoomies when a topic came up that got everyone very excited. I wish I remember who asked it, but they wanted to know people’s favorite Pagan cookbooks. As we tossed titles back and forth (which I did not have the foresight to write down), I proposed posting the question on the Church of the Earth Facebook page so we could share our finds, and then writing a newsletter article about it. And here is the result. Huzzah!

Now before I get to The List, Laurel pointed out, “Any cookbook can be a magical cookbook if you add your own intent and magic while you are cooking!” Great point! I am glad she reminded me, because I sometimes forget this.

Now the moment you’ve all been waiting for (drum roll, please)…

THE LIST (tada!)

Aromatherapy in the Kitchen: Fragrant Foods for Body, Mind and Soul
by Melissa Dale

Jaime says, “This is the book I asked about at Imbolc. Not specifically pagan, but uses herbs, flowers, etc. in recipes to create specific moods or ambiance. I remember a quiche with lavender that would mellow you out so much you had to plan to basically do nothing after dinner.”

Available used from Independent Sellers and at Thrift Books.

The Book of Kitchen Witchery
by Cerridwen Greenleaf

Dodde got this on her last browse through Quail Ridge Books. With recipes and spells for the self, home, garden, and Sabbats, this is a fun read that gives you all sorts of ideas to incorporate into everyday life.

Available locally at Quail Ridge Books and used at Thrift Books.

Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Wicca in the Kitchen
by Scott Cunningham

Dodde thinks this is a classic, but not really a cookbook per se. “If you want to know the magical properties of the ingredients in your kitchen and spells to use them in, this will do ya!”

Available locally at Quail Ridge Books and used at Thrift Books.

A Kitchen Witch’s Cookbook
by Patricia Telesco

Courtney recommended this one saying, “Not only are there a lot of recipes sorted by season and type with country of origin listed there are several appendices giving associations, lists of celebrations & tools, etc.”

Available locally at Quail Ridge Books and used at Thrift Books.

Nanny Ogg’s Cookbook: A Useful and Improving Almanack of Information Including Astonishing Recipes from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld (Discworld Series)
by Terry Pratchett

Kim wanted to know if Nanny Ogg’s Cookbook counted. Being a Pratchett fan myself, I say yes, yes it does. “It’s a very tongue-in-cheek thing written by one of my favorite Terry Pratchett characters and makes me laugh out loud several times on every page, but the recipes are real and actually pretty good!”

Available locally at Quail Ridge Books and used at Thrift Books.

Sabbat Entertaining: Celebrating the Wiccan Holidays with Style
by Willow Polson

From Tamara, “Sabbat Entertaining not only has recipes geared toward each Sabbat, but includes crafts, activities, and ideas for decorations. This book is all about how to truly make each Sabbat a special occasion.”

Available used from Independent Sellers and Thrift Books.

Supermarket Magic: Creating Spells, Brews, Potions & Powders from Everyday Ingredients
by Michael Furie

Shelby was talking about Supermarket Magic at Imbolc. Whether celebrating Sabbats or bringing something new into your life, you now can create spells, charms, and magical meals from easy to find, everyday ingredients.

Available locally at Quail Ridge Books and used at Thrift Books.

The Wicca Cookbook: Recipes, Ritual, and Lore
by Jaime Wood and Tara Seefeldt

Both Melissa and Tamara recommended The Wicca Cookbook, so you know it is a good one! Here is an excerpt from its introduction: “…divided into these nature-based festivals. Each recipe is preceded by a hallowed meaning, the ingredients’ therapeutic value, historical significance, or a spell or ritual you can perform in conjunction with the food preparation.”

Available locally at Quail Ridge Books and used at Thrift Books.

Witch in the Kitchen: Magical Cooking for All Seasons
by Cait Johnson

Dodde’s first magical cookbook! It takes us through the year with seasonal recipes, Sabbat spells, and magical meditations.

Available locally at Quail Ridge Books and used at Thrift Books.

And there you have it, nine books to get you started. If YOU have any good books you would like to share, please post in the comments. Bon Appetit!
