Midsummer

In Divinely Inspired, Nature by DoddeLeave a Comment

It is no surprise to anyone who has stepped outside anytime in the last few weeks that it is SUMMER! Midsummer is the celebration of the sun at its peak, the Summer Solstice.  The long days are filled with endless light and heat, great for days by the pool with Creamsicles. It is a time when crops are growing and ripening. Fruits and vegetables are coming into season, and there is nothing better than a sun-warmed tomato fresh off the vine. Pretty soon we will celebrate “National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor’s Porch Day” (August 8th).

And as we are buzzing around in the light, it does us good to remember that the days are beginning to shorten. Not that we notice it at first because we still have July, August, and most of September for our summer shenanigans. But the time to do things is NOW! What are you waiting for? What do you want/need to do while the energies are flowing and the sun is high?

I find I am most productive when the sun is shining. Lately I’ve been inspired to clean out the Piles of Indecision that have been haunting the corners of my house since the kids were in elementary school. Yes, there has been a mountain of pillows in my bedroom almost as tall as me that I have been saving to wash and donate to animal rescues. And this past weekend I actually DID IT! It feels great! The more crap I get rid of, the less time I spend cleaning and dusting, and the more time I have for anything else that is more fun than that. Like sitting on my screened porch under the ceiling fan with a glass of iced tea and a giant cat while reading the books that are stacked by my bed and couch and on my desk and kitchen counters—all of the books that I never seem to have time to read. Some are non-fiction woo books, some are cheesy titles I will not admit to reading voraciously (*cough* Nora Roberts).

Sure, I spend time working. We all have to. But taking the time to do something fun is what summer is all about! This is the time of year to do ALL of the things, some productive and some lazy. How will you spend your time?  The long days are filled with endless light and heat, great for days by the pool with Creamsicles. It is a time when crops are growing and ripening.
